How to Effectively Work a Day Job and Build an eBiz at Night

Man, oh, man do I wish I could quit my day job and build my eBiz full time. Ha! But, that’s just not a reality (YET). So, I must come up with really, really effective ways to build my eBiz in my spare time (like I have any of that).

How can we effectively work a day job and build an ebiz at night (oh, and without sacrificing our kids and spouse)? Through a lot of tears and sweat! :) Well, besides that here is what I’m doing now.

Plan Every Second, Minute, Hour, Day

This might sound silly to someone but I cannot even stress how important detail planning is when you don’t have a lot of time. Think: wasting time is my ENEMY! So, for example, after work my evening might be something like this:

430-500 - Drive home.
501-800 - Family time only (my fun time).
801-1100 - Work on ebiz only.

1101 - Get some much needed ZZZs

And it’s not just a night thing. I wake up earlier, use down time at work, and my lunches to build my eBiz. Make your time count for something.

All work and no play? Of course not! It’s equally important to schedule time for fun and family too. There must be balance otherwise it’s too easy to burn out.

Use Gazelle Intensity

gazelle.jpg If you’ve ever read the Total Money Makeover you’ll know what I mean. Even though Dave Ramsey is talking about using this type of intensity to get out of debt - I see it as using this type of intensity to build my eBiz to the point that it will replace my day job. A Gazelle uses this kind of intensity to avoid being eaten. It’s about being extreme to the point that you will do whatever it takes to achieve your goal (I don’t mean doing something stupid - I mean constantly engaging in above average activities that bring you closer to your goal). It’s about being extraordinary, driven, and focused.

Implement Monetizing Strategies - Test, Test, Test

I have to know exactly how I’m going to make money. I’m not going to do something just for the sake of doing it. I want to know that what I’m doing is bringing me closer to my monetary goal (and my ultimate goal - to quit my job). Most of everything I do for my ebiz should some how relate to getting paid - whether it’s one month or one year down the road. This is especially true if you really want your eBiz to replace your day job. If something doesn’t work…I will try something else. I’m not afraid to try new things. I don’t want an opportunity to pass me by.

To sum it up - it is very possible to effectively work a day job and build an ebiz at night when you are committed, driven, and focused. The key is to be extremely organized and to follow through on actions that take you step by step to your goal.

I’m open to any suggestions to increase productivity and effectiveness. So, please share what you do!

Thanks for passing on excellent advice! I can identify with trying to work a full-time job during the day and build and ebiz at night. I am planning my retirement and have started to build my eBay store in anticipation of that time. It is up & running smoothly now, but researching & networking is the key to success. From the various forums I belong to have I have gotten excellent advice, and have also established a Blog to chronicle & try to help other Boomers & SAHM/WAHMs.
